Parametric Urbanism_Gradient Differentiation through Component Based Systems

Dimitris

DimitrisOur research is focusing on exploring large scale urban organization through collective logic of smaller parametrically controlled parts. These parts are employed to create a continuous urban network of commerce and leisure with a coherent identity through differentiated local conditions.

Use of parametric software Generative Components allowed us to investigate structurally and spatially intelligent component system for gradient differentiation in multiple scales ranging from material system to urban organizations. Through the local transformation of the parametric components from horizontal to vertical formations, complex spatial organizations are generated.

DimitrisThe research was implemented as a gradient urban design proposal of commerce in Stratford, London. Spatial parameters such as scale, porosity, proximity and orientation were explored in relation to circulatory typologies in order to provide differentiated spatial organization and program distribution within the design proposal.

Dimitris Akritopoulos

This research project is a collaborative work of Sylvia Georgiadou, Dimitris Akritopoulos and Deniz Manisali. We focus on using newly developed parametric tools to generate a design process consistent in multiple scales.

The research was developed during the 16 months March Program Design Research Laboratory of the Architectural Association as a part of Parametric Urbanism Agenda. Sylvia Georgiadou (Greece) graduated from the School of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle University in 2005 Dimitris Akritopoulos (Greece) graduated from London Metropolitan University in 2005. Deniz Manisali (Turkey) graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2003. We are all currently working at Zaha Hadid Architects.
